What do you do at Navigating Care?
I’m a Lead Software Engineer for a Ruby on Rails application which mainly helps staff at cancer clinics provide better care for their patients.
What motivated you to start working at Navigating Care?
Navigating Care is a company with a pretty easy mission to get behind. Personally I’ve known a few people close to me that have been impacted by cancer and it felt like a good opportunity to be able to have a positive impact on a large number of people who are navigating a tough time in their lives.
What’s the best thing about your job?
Getting feedback, either directly or from usage metrics after launching a feature and seeing it actually getting used. At Navigating Care it is especially impactful since the feature usually correlates directly to an improved experience either for a patient dealing with a condition or allowing a clinic’s staff member to provide better care for that patient.
What does working remotely look like to you?
I work from Upstate New York in an old farm house that I’m slowly remodeling. I’m joined by my wife and two loving but hyper dogs in my day to day.
What’s your team like at Navigating Care?
We’re a nationally distributed small team. Most folks are somewhere on the East Coast, however we do have a few team members who travel more than others and it always keeps us on our toes as to what time zone team members are in. It’s also fun to see everyone’s pets and children since we’re fully remote.
What’s the best thing about working for Navigating Care?
Aside from being able to work on projects which genuinely help people, everyone here is an absolute joy to work with. While we have our challenges as a growing company, all of my coworkers make it an amazing place to work.
What’s the most unique job you’ve had before working here?
My first job out of college I worked on avionics primarily for the military. The site I worked at had a few airframes for testing purposes and it was always rewarding to see those flying with items onboard that you knew you had a part in building.
What can you be found doing outside of work?
Generally that depends on the season. In the winter I’m usually working on home improvement projects inside the house. In the spring, summer, and fall I enjoy hiking and scuba diving.
Tell me something about you that most people don’t know?
I saw my first harbor seal up close in the wild while scuba diving near Seattle. It snuck up on me from behind and proceeded to shove me out of the way so it can get its dinner. For the local divers in Seattle it was down near the “I-Beams” at Cove 2.
